Infancy and Childhood - Unique Windows For Osteopathic Treatment

Osteopathy addresses structural restrictions and compressive forces mainly related to the birth process and the baby's position in the womb. These restricted regions (read-hard/tight) may impact an infant's health immediately by contributing to:
  • tension throughout the body
  • arching of the neck
  • asymmetric movement patterns of the arms or legs
  • feeding difficulties
  • reflux
  • torticollis and plagiocephally (to name a few).
It is difficult quantify the long term benefits of having treatment as an infant, but we know that infancy and childhood are unique windows for treatment. The structure has greater flexibility than any other stage in life, and treatment has the potential to offer lifetime benefits such as improved symmetry, flexibility and circulation to the musculoskeletal and central nervous systems.

We recommend treatment both to address specific health concerns as well as preventively to support growth and development through the challenges of daily life. Examples of important times for preventive treatment include:

  • after birth for all babies,
  • after multiple bumps and bonks to the head/falls on the buttocks as a toddler,
  • around major developmental milestones, such as crawling and walking,
  • to support speech development,
  • after or during intense sports seasons,
  • during and/or after periods of rapid growth.
About 2 treatments a year is often a good rule of thumb for preventive Osteopathic Care.
